Take It or Leave It!

No photos to share today. Took it easy and rested my feet. I slept in until noon today...first time since I arrived. My friend Dom is working on a new game show at Pinewood Studios and he invited me to come watch all day if I wanted. I opted for the evening shoots.

The studios are in Iver Heath, in the northwest corner of Greater London, far from public transport. So I had to take the tube from Richmond station (furthest southwest) to Uxbridge station (furthest northwest). A good hour and ten minutes on the tube. Then Dom swung by to get me at the station on his break.

He gave me a quick whirlwind tour of the studio (including pointing out the soundstage next door they burned down shooting the new James Bond film) and the gallery (control room). I hoped I could sit in the gallery for the show. The director and producer didn't have a problem. But the Executive Producer was still nervous about production and didn't want visitors. So I sat in the studio audience for one show and backstage for the other.

It's called "Take It Or Leave It." Basically the premise is a pair of contestants (couple, friends etc) answer a series of questions in hopes of winning up to £50,000. They are asked the questions and given a possible answer. They can "Take" that answer or "Leave" it for another option. But they only get to "leave" it once. If it's wrong they are swapped out for another pair of contestants waiting at the edge of the stage. The two pairs of contestants can swap in and out a lot. If they get a correct answer they choose two vaults from a set of 20. In each vault is a different amount of money they can "take" or "leave." It goes on and it doesn't translate well into text. It can be quite cruel. The last one I saw had a two friends from Scotland lose the first question. They swapped out for a couple who were waiting at the edge of the stage (in something called the Sin Bin). The couple answered 8 of the 10 questions correctly. On the 9th question they got it wrong and it swapped back to the Scottish guys who ended up winning the £30,000 the couple banked up answering all the questions.

It was interesting. Afterwards, Dom, Bill (who had been working on "The All Star Celebrity Talent Show" all day) and I met up at a pub in Richmond called The White Swan for some pints. That's my day...take it or leave it.
